Neck and Neck

In my last edition of Men's Fashion Head to Toe we looked at options for the face. As we make our way down from head to toe, it becomes time to focus on the neck. The neck is a body part often overlooked by men when considering a fashion choice especially compared to women. However, that is no excuse not to do so. Join me as I consider the possibilities.

The closest most men come to decorating or accentuating their neck is wearing a collared shirt and for the business man, a tie. You have to admit guys, those are some pretty boring options. As a matter of fact the tie reminds me too much of a hangman's noose. It is as a yoke that binds and enslaves. I like fashion freedom myself which is a central theme of my Hubs so let's examine some alternatives.

Are You Choking?

Stick your neck out

Stick your neck out on this one guys! For the more conservative man who wishes to maintain a certain comfort level, there are always traditional necklaces. These come in different mediums such as precious metals or woven fibers. They have different styles such as chain link or rope. Just don't go overboard with the bling. Mr. T may be an icon of Hollywood and America but you won't get any positive attention sporting layer after layer of gold chains and trinkets. In fact you may get robbed! For the man who would adventure a bit further, try adding a charm to the necklace. Necklaces can come in many length as well so choose one that hangs just off the neck to be most flattering.

Colder weather is a good time to decorate that neck as well as keep it warm just like any other body part. A scarf is a good accessory for that. For the more conservative, choose a solid color that matches your outfit. For the more bold, consider a pattern or bold color not usually found in the drab stable of the men's department. Of course colder weather is not the only time to wear a scarf. There are plenty of scarves made of lighter weight, cooler material such as silk available that could be worn as an accessory in warmer months. Not neck related, but such scarves could even be worn as sort of a head wrap/bandana alternative, especially for longer haired guys. Think Matthew McConaughey in the movie Sahara, before he was riding a camel.

We cannot exclude the most bold of men from this discussion of neck decoration. For you who are most bold, there is the choker. It can really look amazing if done right. This option is usually reserved for the rebellious rocker or the submissive masochist, but with a little thought a choker could look great. This accessory probably shouldn't be worn in a work environment, even by women, but a night on the town would be perfect. For the "conservative" bold try a choker that is simply a small chain or beaded rope, possibly even a one inch high cloth or leather. For the more bold, try one that is leather and has rivets, studs or other decorations.

Whatever you may decide in neck decoration, have fun with it. Remember, there is such a thing as too many accessories. Try not to go overboard. That is it for now. Join me next time as we continue to examine men's fashion, head to toe.
